Both Indiana senators, Democrat Joe Donnelly and Republican Todd Young, introduced the idea of a national Ernie Pyle Day.  In December 2017, the resolution passed unanimously.   The celebration is on August 3, which is Pyle’s birth date.  Pyle was born in Dana, Indiana, and he studied journalism at Indiana University. He wrote newspaper columns for Scripps Howard and was sent to cover the wars in Europe against Hitler and in Asia against the Japanese.
